The place

Bohuslän

This coast is granite and water — bare rock scoured smooth by ice, split into thousands of islands, with the sea running between them in long fjords.

Tjörn is the sixth largest island in Sweden, an hour north of Gothenburg and tied to the mainland by the Tjörn bridge. Almösund sits at its northeast corner, beneath the span. Askeröfjorden opens north of the bridge, Hakefjorden runs south towards Älgön, and Stenungsund is the town on the mainland shore opposite.

Which of that water the championship races on will be settled closer to the event. Either way it is fjord rather than open sea — sheltered, and walled by rock.

In the middle of June, this far north, the light barely leaves. Racing finishes and the evening goes on for hours.

The class

International One Design

The International One Design is a 33-foot keelboat drawn in 1936 by the Norwegian naval architect Bjarne Aas. Nine decades on, the boats are still built and raced to one strict set of measurements.

That is the whole point of the class. Every boat is the same, so nothing separates the fleet but the people sailing it — starts, shifts, boat handling, nerve. It is one of the purest tests in keelboat racing.

Fleets race on both sides of the Atlantic, and the World Championship moves between them. In 2027 it comes to Almösund, on the Swedish west coast.
